Women in History
The under-representation of women in history is an important issue, and one I take seriously in presenting a balanced historical record.
Women are included in the World History Timeline, but in smaller numbers than men. That imbalance isn’t a reflection of the importance of women or their contributions, but rather of how history has been written and preserved in largely male-dominated societies, where women’s lives and achievements were often under-recorded or overlooked altogether.
Much of the source material used to populate a timeline is itself written by men and heavily skewed toward the deeds of men. As a result, the imbalance in the Timeline mirrors an existing imbalance in the historical record.
That being said, I fully recognise this limitation, and I’m actively working to address it by researching and including more women wherever reliable dates and context allow.
The Timeline is a living project, and improving its balance and depth is an ongoing part of that work.
